Dear Void (of stories?*),
Stories are where I live and breathe. A world to get lost in. Or maybe it’s a world to be found in. To forget the chaos of our world. Or, to find solutions to ours. It is a place to get lost but also to be found. When I am stressed I read to get lost in someone else’s fantasy but even when I am content I read to be found elsewhere. Stories connect people. Sometimes looking at the world through another person’s eyes can change everything.
Some -not very intelligent- people think of fiction as a mere fantasy. Fake. Useless… But I find that seeing a completely different world itself is eye opening. There are always parallels between worlds if only you know how to look for them. Seeing these similarities and differences through a different lens might be just what we need. Whether it is on a personal or global level storytellers of fiction and nonfiction know how to weave their story to show their perspective. One that is maybe different to how you thought.
Now, I said “storyteller” because there are so many ways to convey a story which I think is ultimately a message. Whether it be through books, articles and journalism, fiction, non fiction, speeches, or through the visual arts they are all stories that want to be told and known. I love books because it allows you to see inside a character’s head and go with them on their journey through their thought process but I also love movies and TV shows because it lets you visualise everything and it can be easier to show different perspectives. It is fascinating to see all the different ways we have to convey a message.
Honestly, the message of this letter is unclear to even me and maybe there are many ways to interpret it or maybe there aren’t. Whatever it is -they’re my thoughts onto paper (they were on paper before I typed it down ok?)
Find me in a story!
Zahra
*In a previous letter I said how a void may be so many colours blended into black but what if it was so many stories of so many people that just mesh into one big one and imagine being able to uncover all the stories that have been there…
p.s I’m going on holiday soon!!! Bye bye school!
